High on Fire

East Bay stoner metal trio sets fire to their genre with their new album, Surrounded By Thieves. Guitarist/singer Matt Pike reveals all the gritty details.

“I think Beethoven’s 9th is like the heaviest thing ever written. I listen to certain kinds of jazz, I love progressive rock—Rush and Mahavishnu Orchestra and things like that.”

Moggs

Two conceptually-minded, seasoned musicians with eclectic audio and visual backgrounds, and a miraculous collection of instruments. Don’t hate them because they're beautiful.

“There is always going to be the ‘too cool for school’ kids—those are our targets, those are the people who we actively pursue. You know who I’m talking about—those sitting in the back, those most jaded, most inactive. We are interested in preaching to both the converted and non-converted alike.”

Pitch Black

Creepy skater punks prepare to release their first full-length album and they will force you to like it in any way they can (most likely by using lots of fire!).

“We're used to playing fast punk stuff and [on our new record we are] trying to slow that down and change it up or do something a little different with it. We're writing songs that we think are slow and, compared to all the other bands playing around right now, it doesn't come off as slow at all, it comes off as fast.”

The Moore Brothers

Folk duo of Thom and Greg Moore talk about the Stork Club, Bratmobile, and Girl George.

“I think it’s [true] with any music—repeated listing definitely helps. If you listen to a record five times, you get it; Whereas if you listen to it twice, you might not get it. I try to write stuff that will immediately grab you. I guess I’m trying to figure out what the things are that make instantly likeable music, and try to repeat that.”
