Special Report: The Local Recording Industry Speaks Out

Despite the tough economy, some independent studios have remained successful. We spoke with some prominent studios on the state and future of their businesses.

Grandaddy

The Modesto-based space-pop band explores its poppier side with successful results on its latest album, Sumday. Frontman Jason Lytle discusses a few of the details.

“The day involves a multitude of ups and downs. I'm usually just trying to capture a day in the life on tape. You gotta have rain to fully appreciate the sun. This record has nothing on it about war. George W. Bush is a dork!”

From Monument to Masses

The Oakland trio discusses its refined approach to meshing music and politics on its new album, The Impossible Leap In One Hundred Simple Steps.

“I don’t think we as a band can anticipate how people are gonna respond to us.”

Film School

Krayg Burton, Nyles Lannon, Ben Montesano, Justin Labo, and Jason Ruck discuss the evolution of their music and career.

“I used to work in a record store and sort through millions of budget-CDs, and it’s just heart-wrenching to see broken dream after broken dream—all these bands on major labels who had thought they had their chance. Here they were six months out with their record, and it was already in the budget bin. I don’t want to be that band. I will do anything to not be that band.”

Run_Return

Tommy Fugelsang, Kevin Dineen, Raj Ojha, and Joel Robinow delve into serene mischief with their upcoming second album.

“We try to make stuff as abnormal as we can, taking things out of context and putting them into new ones.”
