Special Report: Local Independent Record Labels 101

As major record labels struggle to find new sounds to capitalize on, independent record labels have their finger on the pulse of the underground scene. We check in with some of your favorite labels to see what they've got cooking on the burner.

The Effection

This East Bay power trio makes writing intelligent music sound easy. Their debut album, Soundtrack To A Moment, is chock full of harmonizing vocals, thoughtfully crafted pop hooks, jumping bass lines, smart lyrics, and melodies that you just can’t stop tapping your foot to. We hunted them down, picked their brains, snapped photos, and lived to tell.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

After dealing with the rush of attention for their stunning debut on Virgin, the uncertainty of being the new band at a major label, and some post-9/11 red tape that barred their Brit-born drummer from working in the U.S., the Bay Area boys are back with album number two, imperatively titled Take Them On, On Your Own.

Oranger

Read how Oranger try to describe their own sound, discuss the inner workings of a monkey’s brain (as in the animals, not the musicians) and set fire to giant records to escape a desert island! …okay not really, but they would if they had too.
