Special Report: Local Poster Artists

San Francisco has long been a haven for some of the country’s best and most well known poster artists. We spoke with some of these artists as they tell us how they got their start, their creative process, and insight into the business of poster making.

Beulah

A pop band goes to the dark side with their latest album, Yoko, out on Velocette Records. Yoko is a break-up album for the older generation, with a hint of cynicism and bitterness interlaced with standard pop melodies and sugary hooks. But is this to be the end of Beulah? Guitarist and horn player Bill Swan discusses the details.

Elephone

Five qualified musicians plus their unbreakable instruments multiplied by their seemingly limitless creative sparks equal Elephone. It’s only been a short eight months that the five have been together but already they’re getting a lot of attention (they played Lollapalooza this summer) and rightfully so, as they’ve hit the ground running.

Jolie Holland

She’s one of three artists short-listed by Tom Waits for album of the year, and, as the latest artist to be signed to Anti- Records (home to Waits and Cave, as well as Merle Haggard, Solomon Burke, and assorted heavyweights), it’s impossible to deny that this gal’s got the goods.

Truxton

Their self-titled debut album was released by Substandard Records in late August, and is a collection of songs with a foundation in folk and a bit of indie-rock passion that, coupled with Armentrout’s angelic voice, makes for beautiful, moving, and well-written life-affirming anthems.

Goapele & Peven Everett

This is the era of neo-soul, today's spin on yesteryear's historic men and women musical pioneers—the torchbearers of the new millennium. On their swing through San Francisco's famed Fillmore, we caught up with Oakland's Goapele and Chicago native Peven Everett to feel the pulse of the future of their unique styles of music.
